Album Review - Trivium - In The Court of the Dragon

‘In The Court Of The Dragon you will know your worth’ but has Trivium met the expectations that come with reaching that 10th studio album milestone?

Trivium is a very sentimental band for me for many reasons. I went through high school and my early twenties listening to this band religiously. So I was intrigued to see what the Dragon had to offer. Having given the record a fair few spins, my first impression and lasting opinion is…blah.

The album has not captivated my attention as a Dragon should.

That isn’t to say that this is a bad record because it’s not and it is stronger than their last few records. It’s just not particularly interesting either, especially for a 10th studio album. There is no denying that Trivium are incredibly talented at what they do but this album appears to be a scattershot attempt at combining the very best of Ascendancy, The Crusade and Shogun without landing that result.

That signature Trivium sound is present with their explosive and muscular riffs offset by Heafy’s melodic and gutteral vocals but it seems disjointed. I would imagine that  the tracks would be better delivered and received during a live show but as a recording, it just doesn’t hit that spot with me.

In my opinion, the strongest tracks are In The Court Of The Dragon, Like A Sword Over Damocles and The Phalanx but everything else in between is not memorable. I don’t think there’s anything particularly wrong with them, they just seem a bit samey.

I love Trivium but unfortunately, I don’t vibe with this album and I give it a 5/10.
