Album Review - Hand of Kalliach - Samhain

I’m a Scot, a metalhead and a lover of all things Celtic/folk, Scottish myth and legend. So I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to listen to and review Hand of Kalliach’s debut album ‘Samhainn.’

The atmospheric Celtic, melodic death metal duo from Edinburgh dropped their debut album on Friday 22nd October 2021 and it is a record steeped in absolute beauty and brutality right down to the album artwork. They have impressively incorporated a hauntingly gorgeous Celtic sound interwoven with ferocious death metal savagery.

There is plenty of subject matter to draw upon when it comes to writing a Celtic death metal record focusing on Scotland’s vast plethora of myths and legends. For example, the track ‘Each Uisge’ tells the tale of a mythical horse demon of the sea that binds to the flesh of its victims and then drowns them to devour them. It doesn’t get much more metal than that.

Hand of Kalliach have proven that this genre can be just as blistering. The sound is powerful, the vocals are savage and ethereal, the tracks are a perfect blend of catchy and heavy. For me, this is a strong contender for debut album of the year.

I completely vibe with this album and it is a personal favourite of mine. I give it 10/10.
