Album Review: Ophelia's Eye - Hopeless World

Swiss Melodic Death Metal riff-wizards. Ophelia’s Eye have self-released their blistering “mini-album” ‘Hopeless World‘ which is set to catapult them from the underground in to the limelight. Setting out to “enflame” the audience, the band wants to cast a spell over the listener in order for them to lose their connection with reality; an ambitious goal indeed.

Guitarist Corinne Ryter states: “On this LP, we dealt with a number of difficult situations, from suicide, misused trust, divisiveness, envy, greed and selfishness. All the songs are packed with energy, some with engaging melodic riffs and some with astute melancholy. We really want the listener to think when hearing this record.”

The record opens with ‘My Honour,’ a blistering battle cry to shake you to the core. Melody meets riffy brutality and sets the tone for the rest of the record. ‘Fuck My Trust‘ does exactly what it says on the tin; classic melo-death full of aggression, catchy hooks, brutal vocals and a blistering rhythm section.

The title track slows the tempo at the record’s midway point with a melancholy guitar solo before launching straight in to harsh yet emotive vocals before picking the pace up again. ‘Hopeless World‘ is a main staple of the record and according to the band, a favorite for them to play.

Human Abyss‘ is the ‘quirky’ track of the record, opening with cries of anguish and a distant, maniacal laugh. Thrashy in nature with thunderous drumming, rage fueled vocals and lightning fast riffage; this track is guaranteed to get you headbanging, The thrash theme continues with ‘I’m Explosive’ before closing with the final melo-death track ‘Pain and Sorrow.

Ophelia’s Eye have the potential to make a serious name for themselves in the European melo-death circuit with their groovy metalcore influences, flourishing technical guitar riffs and aggressive energy. Certainly a name to watch out for.
