Marty Friedman’s last show with Megadeth

Marty Friedman’s last show with Megadeth

On this day in metal January 14th, 2000.

Rolling into Seattle that night, did anyone expect this would be Marty’s last show with the band? The band was playing The Moore Theatre in support of their Risk album.

Friedman later stated that he got tired of “holding the flag” for traditional metal and felt that he could not evolve as a musician. In an interview with Ultimate-Guitar.com in March 2007, Friedman claimed that he wanted Megadeth to move towards a more aggressive sound and that he’d rather have been playing straight pop music than the pop-influenced metal Megadeth was playing at the time. During Friedman’s time in the band, they sold over ten million albums worldwide.

Back in 2015, he was offered the chance to rejoin the band but refused. “Just because there’s a vacancy in the band doesn’t mean that, ‘Oh, now is my chance to join Megadeth.’ There’s absolutely no reason for me to do that. However, I’m very, very close friends with Mustaine and [David] Ellefson, and the band in general, and I love them like brothers. So if they talk to me, I listen. We’re very close. So I support them, and I wish them nothing but success and power and everything great. But just because there’s a vacancy in the band is not enough of a reason for me to, all of a sudden, put aside all the things I’m doing and then just join their band. It’s just not.”

Marty Friedman appeared on some of Megadeth’s most iconic albums during his 10-year tenure. He played guitar on five LPs in total: Rust in Peace (1990), Countdown to Extinction (1992), Youthanasia (1994), Cryptic Writings (1997) and Risk (1999).
