Album Review: Three – The Winery Dogs

The Winery Dogs have reappeared with their third release simply titled “Three”. Ritchie Kotzen, Billy Sheehan, and Mike Portnoy have returned with their different style of rock, blues, jazz and funk. It has been eight years since the release of their last album Hot Streak.

“Three” is everything you would expect from the band musically. All members are astonishing  musicians and songwriters. Each member brings a unique style and song writing ability to create the formula that has made the band popular. Rather than supergroup which this band is without saying. But now they’re becoming a super band.

The Winery Dogs have a unique sound and quality that are solidified on this album. It has a much different feel than previous releases. It is everything you would expect and so much more!

I really enjoyed the entire album. But three of the songs in particular really made an impression on me. The biggest reason? Each of the three songs highlights each musician’s talent and gives them the opportunity to shine on the track. Rise, Stars, and Gaslight are my favorites but there are so many great jams on this record.

“Rise” is the track that Billy Sheehan lays it down with the tasty groove and mind blowing scales. The bass solo is a true face melter!

Ritchie Kotzen takes center stage with the track “Stars”. It has a hypnotic feel and the vocals truly shine. This song has incredible melodies and the guitar solo is epic. Ritchie is such a talented musician and perfect frontman for this trio.

Lastly, for me nothing better than listening to Mike Portnoy lay down the wood behind the drum kit. The song “Gaslight” is a high energy blast of double bass drums in your face. Hopefully this song makes the bands upcoming tour setlist!

Overall, I enjoyed this album and I think it is a solid release. In many ways this could be the best of the band’s catalog. Well for now. Highly recommend you give it a listen!
