Album Review: Necrophagous - In Chaos Ascend

It’s a new year, a new start, a whole new time for metal and what better way to dust off the Christmas fatigue than with a shiny new debut album? The Swedish Death Metal trio Necrophagous have blasted their way to the forefront of 2022 with their debut album In Chaos Ascend and what a start to the new year it is.

Albeit a debut album, the members themselves are by no means novices to the world of death metal. Consisting of ex-Entrails members Tommy Carlsson on vocals/guitars, Jocke Svensson on bass and Martin Michaelsson on drums, the trio have banded together to form a fresh take on old school Swedish death metal that is not just a regurgitation of their aforementioned previous band. They have went on record to state:

Back in 2019, we decided to start Necrophagous with the intention to write catchy riffs and more groovy and structured Death Metal songs rather than focus on speed and extremely technical riffs.”

Which is exactly what they have done. With Carlsson’s brutal vocals and chugging, groove-laden guitar riffs, Svensson’s slapping bass and Michaelsson’s relentless drumming blast beats, Necrophagous have delivered an addictively, irresistible record that is both precise and merciless. This is a classic handbanging death metal record with a modern twist frequently alternating between fast and mid-paced tempos. At 45 minutes long, this 11 track record maintains all the catchy hooks you can sink your teeth into without it becoming tedious. This is a strong debut album and a fantastic start to the year. Plus, any band who release coffee mugs as band merch is a winner in my eyes. I give it a solid 8/10.
