The Budweiser Stage, bathed in the crisp glow of early autumn, served as the perfect venue for an evening steeped in 90s nostalgia. With the crowd packed to capacity, the palpable buzz in the air set the stage for a reverent celebration of a beloved musical era.
The evening commenced with Soul Asylum, whose brief but electrifying set ignited the crowd. Their rendition of 'Runaway Train' elicited a raucous sing-along, deftly setting an exuberant tone for the rest of the night.
Following was Live, whose performance was a masterclass in nostalgia. Lead vocalist Ed Kowalczyk, the sole original member present, demonstrated the vocal prowess that propelled the band to fame. In honour of the 30th anniversary of their seminal album Throwing Copper, Live delivered a complete performance of the record, eliciting delighted cheers from an enthusiastic audience.
The evening’s standout performance came courtesy of Stone Temple Pilots (STP). The band, now fronted by Jeff Gutt, radiated an infectious energy that captivated the audience. Gutt’s dynamic stage presence and heartfelt tributes to the late Scott Weiland imbued the set with a poignant resonance. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of their Purple album, STP navigated through a setlist replete with fan favourites such as 'Plush,' 'Dead and Bloated,' 'Crackerman,' and 'Sex Type Thing.' Gutt’s interactions with the audience further intensified the intimate atmosphere of the performance.
A particularly touching moment of the evening came when both Stone Temple Pilots and Live welcomed local artists onto the stage, with STP welcoming guitarist Charlie Edward, underscoring their support for the local music scene and adding a distinctive flavour to the night’s festivities. Another highlight of the concert was when STP welcomed Steve Mazur, guitarist from Our Lady Peace and former bandmate of Gutt, to join them for a few songs.
In summary, the night was a resounding success, characterized by iconic tracks and stellar performances that offered a vivid retrospective of the 90s rock scene. The concert not only celebrated the enduring legacy of these legendary bands but also created lasting memories for all in attendance.
