Interviewing Thrash Metal Legend DD Verni of Overkill

Interviewing Thrash Metal Legend DD Verni of Overkill

DD Verni has been the bassist for legendary thrash metal band Overkill for 4 decades. Much like DD's debut solo record Barracade, he recorded all the bass, guitar, and vocals for his new record Dreadful Company. He let his Punk Rock roots come out for these two records and his approach was what he does with every project he is in; which is to do "what is tripping his trigger" and not thinking about it too much. His goal was to write it like a punk band but perform it like a metal band.

With Overkill soaring over the years, he never had the time to put out his own solo record. For him, writing a record like this became a bucket list item as well as doing another musical. During the Pandemic, he had a lot of time on his hands so he decided to use his home studio to record Dreadful Company, an Overkill record, and his big band record. When sitting down to write this record there was no palm muting, chugging, or double kick. Just wide open Ramones chords and melodies.

This reflects what he listens to outside of  Thrash Metal. He loves Big Band, Thrash Metal, and Punk Rock and he listed some of his favourite bands with a few unexpected surprises! He also talked about if Verni ever did play live shows, he doesn't know if he could not play bass. For him that would feel weird after that being his main instrument for 40 years. Volbeat and Misfits are two bands he would love to tour with this project.
