VERSUS: Eat 'Em and Smile vs. VOA
Welcome to Versus. The series where we look at two albums in metal history, compare them to each other, and
New York Death Metal rippers Undeath have returned with their highly anticipated second album ‘It’s Time…To Rise From The Grave;’ a 10 track, 35 minute long aural assault of absolute brutality that grabs you by the jugular and doesn’t mess about. A solid follow up to their incredible debut album ‘ Lesions of a Different Kind‘ which holds the record as Prosthetic Record’s most pre-ordered LP in the label’s history. A difficult achievement to smash, yet they have obliterated it.
The record rips open with ‘Fiend For Corpses,’ a groovy, mid-tempo riff-fest accompanied by a barrage of bassy, gutteral vocals. Undeath are showcasing their ferocious ability to maintain consistency throughout the record. ‘Defiled Again’, ‘Rise From The Grave‘ and ‘Necrobionics‘ are probably the catchier tracks of the record but continue that theme of infectious riffage and brutality guaranteed to get your head banging.
The second half of the record doesn’t lose its pace and continues with a bludgeoning barrage of brutality. Sheer aggression from ‘Human Chandelier,’ insane riffage and thunderous drumming from ‘Bone Wrought‘ and a savage closer in ‘Trampled Headstones‘ bringing the record full circle.
There has been a resurgence in the old-school Death Metal movement which isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. Having said that, it’s a monumental task to stand out in a genre which is absolutely saturated in killer records and outstanding bands. Undeath have managed just that; bringing back the classic death metal sound with their own distinct twist, the band are certain to continue to evolve and there is no knowing what they will do next.
