New Release Radar - July 12th Releases

Check out our records of the week from Friday July 12th's new releases.

  1. Amorphis: Tales From The Thousand Lakes (Live at Tavastia)
    Genre: Melodic/Progressive Death Metal
FFO: Insomnium, Omnium Gatherum, Sentenced, Wintersun
    Rating: 8/10

A genre-defining album, Amorphis chose to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the record by producing a live version of it. It's hard to believe that this is a live album and it just goes to show how spectacular Amorphis are as a band. Perfectly balanced, equal parts heavy and melodically gorgeous full of atmospheric folk elements and progressive moments. Strong gutterals and crisp, impassioned cleans; this live album is one you will find yourself lost in without realising it is, in fact a live recording.

2. Testament: The Legacy/The New Order 2024 Remasters
Genre: Thrash Metal
FFO: Overkill, Exodus, Death Angel, Kreator, Sodom, Destruction
Rating: 8/10

It goes without saying that Testament are amongst the masters of their craft and in order to celebrate their extensive career, they have released remastered versions of their earliest records The Legacy and The New Order. With new technology, Testament wanted to let the fans hear the albums the way they should be heard. The remastered versions still retain all of that raw, thrashy energy of the 80s but the sound and production is crisp and detailed. A definite for fans of both the band and the thrash metal genre in general.

Turin: The Unforgiving Reality In Nothing
Genre: Blackened Death Metal/Deathcore
FFO: Fit For An Autopsy, Osiah, Godeater
Rating: 7/10

Calling on elements across the extreme metal spectrum, Turin's secpnd studio album packs an intense punch complete with blistering blast beats, brutal breakdowns, ferocious rasping gutteral vocals, stunning solos and savage, intricate riffage. Subtle synths break up the cacophony of rage to create a dynamic and addictive atmosphere of pure foreboding. This album is set to rip your face clean off.

4. Totengott: Beyond The Veil
Genre: Blackened Thrash/Doom/Occult
FFO: Celtic Frost, Triptykon, Hellripper, Devastator, Cauldron
Rating: 7.5/10

A classic example of an album which changes track by track so you need to listen to the whole thing. It starts off thrashy with a blackened edge but when the second track starts, it takes a brooding, doomy turn full of atmosphere with an ominous presence. The record bounces back and forth between the two throughout whilst also blending the thrash and gothic/doom elements together with a sprinkling of black metal and occult influences. This record is a rollercoaster which flows between edgy attitude and dark splendor complete with multilayered gutteral growls and choir-esque vocalisations which weave their way through the instrumentation displaying their formidable power. A genre-defying record and band which are difficult to place in any one subgenre.
