This Day In Metal: August 20th 1987 Metallica Played A Secret Gig at 100 Club in London, England

This Day in Metal August 20, 1987: Metallica played played a secret gig at 100 Club in London, two days before their appearance at Monsters of Rock '87 at Castle Donington. Cover songs from the forthcoming "Garage Days Re-Revisited EP" were performed.

Near the end of the hour long act Newsted's bass dropped out of the mix due to a technical glitch, word passed through the crowd that he'd passed out from the heat. The place was so unbearably hot and overcrowded that it was impossible to verify:

When Newsted's momentary 'collapse' was later misreported, it only added to the gathering list of grievances and personal slights against him the he was now mentally compiling. He even suspected the band of planting the story to their cronies in the music press as another wind-up.

As Dave Thorne says "It as an insane night. This was also the live debut of Leper Messiah. Helpless was performed featuring Brian Tatler on guitar.
